  • Biography

MJ a.k.a Miles Jones grew up in his hometown Toronto surrounded by music from a very young age. His interest in music creation and appreciation is very deeply rooted as a part of his family heritage. His Grandfather, Hedley Jones Sr. helped build Studio One in Jamaica which was the early recording home to reggae legend Bob Marley along with many others. His father, (Deadly) Hedley Jones Jr. came from Jamaica to Toronto in 1969 and began working in the radio industry eventually pioneering Toronto 's DJ club scene during the late 1980's. Miles remembers, “Both my mother and father played music all the time in our house, from Miles Davis to Stevie Wonder, and it became a part of me.”

Miles was very influenced by his family's involvement in music but never took it seriously until the age of 18 when he purchased his first set of turntables. “When I first started mixing my father just told me to listen to the beat. After watching him and practising everyday it became natural.” Miles has an extensive background in the genre of hip-hop which he claims was a big part of his upbringing. “My father introduced me to hip-hop when I was 6 years old and it has stayed with me ever since. I used to dub my voice over rap songs to pretend I was in them. I got my name ‘MJ' from my father when I went on 102.1CFNY radio and he called me ‘DJMJ'.

Miles began rhyming in grade 10 with his neighbourhood friends who gave him the motivation to start battling local emcees. He would freestyle at parties, contests and would also make mixtapes in his friend's basement using tape decks and a mic. His interest in both rhyming and spinning led him to start beat making and music production. He is currently in his final year at McMaster University studying his honours degree in Multimedia and Communication.
In 2004 Miles wrote eleven songs for BMG's music catalogue as a part of the Canadian Idol writers conference. He also got his first production credit in February 2005 on Mike Ford's album titled,'Canada Needs You.' At the moment Miles is working to complete his independent debut release titled, 'ONE CHANCE.'
